As a Brooklynite, almost all year around my bike aka Big Red, is my main mode of transportation and excercise. Around December, when Old Man Winter settles in, I sadly retire Red to the corner of the living room until Spring. It is simply too cold to ride. Big Red’s retirement has a huge effect on me; I become ancy and get the winter blues. So imagine the utter joy I experienced when, at a video shoot at Pulp Nature contributor Caits’ house, I discovered that she had converted her city bike into a stationary bike! Say what?! Now Red is coming out of retirement, and my winter blues and winter weight gain will be no more. I have researched the top trainers ad nauseum, and of course had to share all this info with my Pulp Nature fam. See below for the three most popular brands on the market:
1. RAD Cycle Products Indoor Portable Magnetic Work Out Bicycle Trainer – Best seller at Amazon.com. Reviews say it is a bit noisy, but honestly that is to be expected. It works really well, and is very reasonable at $70.69 at Amazon.com.
2. Magnet Steel Bike, Bicycle Indoor Exercise Trainer Stand- This converter has five internal resistance settings and is considered to be very sturdy. Whether the trainer is too loud is up for debate, but overall it gets the job done. If you want to see it in action, there is a great user review video here.
3. Forza F-2 Trainer- Extremely easy to assemble, and very sturdy. Perfect for people who are casual riders of 2-25 miles per day. If you want a more intense workout, this trainer may not be for you. The Forza F-2 Trainer is commonly used with the Forza Riser Block found here. The riser block may be used to elevate the back wheel and prevent noise.
