This is Falling

By Linda Chavers —

When I wake up I have double vision for ten minutes
And when it’s too hot I start to wander and stumble
Sometimes when I speak my speech is slurred and my lips are not in sync

I wonder if she wakes up clear-eyed, if she holds your hand and runs with you.
I laugh that I’d literally be a drag to you.

I think, I bet she doesn’t have MS.
That I bet her face is pretty on both sides.
I bet she enunciates,
“I love you.”

And I bet she can work her hips just so
When she’s on top.

Still, wouldn’t it be nice, couldn’t you smile (lopsided) with me
that if we woke up together I’d see two of you…
and, I can promise you as sure as there’s no cure, that you’d always hear me say “I love you” so slowly it would just be ours.
